For us humans, a backpack provides a comfortable and convenient way to carry Kitty when he decides he doesn’t want to keep walking, or gets spooked by the wind or a loud vehicle or an off-leash dog shows up.

My 17 year old cat doesn’t want to give up his adventures but doesn’t have the stamina he used to have. He just doesn’t want to admit it. Trust me, after you’ve carried your unhappy kitty back down a trail because he really can’t, or doesn’t want to, walk a couple times, you’ll appreciate a backpack.

The base should be sturdy so Kitty has a solid base that doesn’t sag under her weight. A comfy cushion can make it even more appealing for her. 

You want a backpack with a bit of a structure to it so the sides don’t cave in on Kitty. My starter pack was a fairly inexpensive one from Walmart. They did double duty by converting into carriers. They weren’t great as backpacks because there wasn’t enough structure to keep the bag from sagging into the cats. An upgraded backpack made our adventures more enjoyable.

A cat backpack for a walk in the park would just need a pocket for some treats, a water bottle, a mini first aid kit, and waste clean-up bags.

Using a cat backpack won’t be fun for you if it is difficult to wear. Look for something with padded straps and a cushioned back. A waist strap can be helpful to distribute Kitty’s weight and make it easier to carry him on longer trips. 

Avoid the space capsule style hard side backpacks. They don’t allow for adequate ventilation or comfort for Kitty. They are hard on your back too when wearing them.

Are Cat Backpacks Safe?

Securing Your Cat

It is important to secure your cat in the backpack carrier to prevent them from escaping or getting injured while on the go. Make sure the carrier is properly zipped and secured. A good cat pack will have a short leash that you can attach Kitty’s harness to the backpack. This will ensure that your cat is safe and secure while you are hiking or walking. 

Personally, I don’t use the harness attachment. My boy likes to jump out and return to the trails after a rest.

Monitoring Temperature

Cats are sensitive to temperature changes, so it is important to monitor their comfort level while backpacking. If the temperature is too hot or too cold, it can cause Kitty discomfort. Hypothermia or hyperthermia can result. Be sure to monitor the temperature inside the backpack, use cooling or warming products, and take frequent breaks to allow Kitty to cool down or warm up as needed.

Backpack Training Basics

Training a cat to ride in a backpack requires patience and a gradual approach. The goal is to create a positive association with the backpack, so the cat feels comfortable wearing it and enjoys going on adventures. Your goal is to convince Kitty that his backpack is the safe space to retreat to if he gets scared while you are out and about.

Introducing Your Cat to the Backpack

The first step is to introduce the backpack to your cat. You basically are going to take the same steps as carrier training. Leave the backpack in a room where Kitty spends a lot of time and let him investigate it as he wants. Allow your cat to sniff and explore the backpack at their own pace. Do not force your cat to interact with the backpack.

Creating a Positive Association

Once Kitty is comfortable with the backpack’s presence, start creating a positive association by rewarding them with treats and praise when they approach the backpack. You can also place treats or toys inside the backpack to encourage your cat to investigate further.

Gradual Acclimation

Once your cat is comfortable with the backpack’s presence and has a positive association with it, gradually introduce the concept of riding in the backpack. Start by zipping the pack up for a few seconds. Extend the amount of time Kitty stays in the back. Then, work up to picking up the pack and then walking with it. 

Gradually increase to wearing the pack and then head outside. Start with just outside the door and back in. Slowly increase in time and distance outside. Reward Kitty every time at every step.

Remember, every cat is different, and training may take longer for some cats than others. Be patient, take it slow, and always reward your cat for their cooperation. With time and practice, your cat will be ready for backpack adventures!

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Here are some common issues that cat owners may encounter when using a cat backpack and how to troubleshoot them.

Escape Attempts

Some cats may try to escape from the backpack, especially if they are not used to it. To prevent this, it is important to properly secure the cat inside the backpack. If you have a jumper like my Treeno, don’t use the harness attachment. Or make sure the back is fully zipped at all times.

Behavioral Signs of Stress

Cats may exhibit signs of stress when using a backpack, such as panting, meowing excessively, or hiding inside the backpack. 

It might help if you have a partner who can walk behind you. Sometimes seeing a friendly face can help put Kitty at ease. One of mine has to be carried by my adventure partner, she has to see me and then she is happy to enjoy the adventure.

While you enjoy extra comfort with padded back, shoulder straps, waist, and chest buckles of our pet backpack. It has pockets for adventure essentials, a collapsible bowl and Name Tag ID. Available in a selection of fashion colors, I have purple and turquoise versions.

For the Serious Hiker

The Kurgo G-Train is solidly built with a lot of features for the hikers out there. The backpack is built with comfortable, easily adjustable straps, to make it very wearable. It has gear pockets and for the things you need to carry and is nicely padded for your kitty’s comfort. G-Train doesn’t have as much ventilation as the PetAmi but it does have 3-4 mesh panels. It is water resistant. The bottom is solid and waterproof. It has a front panel handle so you can reverse it into a carrier.

For the Traveler

Backpack carrier built to stand up to claws and teeth. I’m going to need this one for our new Ocicat. She chewed her way out of her last carrier. But we need a soft-side carrier for our travels.
