Senior cats commonly experience medical issues as they age. Many of these age-related health issues can be effectively managed with the help of medications. The older Kitty gets the more likely he is to be on multiple medications. If you live in a multiple cat household like me, you could have multiple cats on multiple medications. Managing medication for senior cats ensures that each cat gets what he needs to properly treat his conditions. But it can be a challenge to keep it all straight.

Because it is likely that Kitty is going to be on more than one medication for different conditions as he ages, it is important that you understand exactly what he takes and why. Review Kitty’s medications at his annual vet visit. Are all the medications still necessary? Is there anything new on the market that might serve him better?

You can keep it as low-tech as a calendar on a wall or go high-high tech with an app like Medisafe. There is physical technology you can use as well like pill boxes with alarms, tabs, or buttons.

• Use a labeled pill box: Separate medications into AM and PM doses to easily keep track of when they need to be given. 
• Use colored baskets and colored duct tape to mark each cat’s medication.
• You can get bottles with a timer feature to help make sure you give things at the right time and prevent missed doses.
• Some timer bottle caps have lights and alarms.
• You can get a switch feature panel to stick to a medication bottle.
• The ultimate in medical management: a monthly pill bottle with wi-fi access, lights, alarms.
• Hang a wall calendar: Mark off each round of medication doses on a wall calendar to keep track of when they have been administered.
• Utilize a daily planner or journal: Use a planner or journal to record medication doses and your cat’s weight. This can help you keep track of any changes in weight that may require adjustments to the medication dosage.
• Set reminders on your phone: Use the alarm or reminder function on your phone to ensure you never miss a medication dose.
• Use a medication tracker app.

Managing Prescriptions and Refills

1. Place the pill on their lips or paws: Some cats will lick the pill off their lips or paws.
2. Hide the pill in a treat like Churu or in cat milk/yogurt: Many cats will eagerly eat a treat or lap up some milk or yogurt, not realizing that there is a pill hidden inside.
3. Hide the pill in food: Try hiding the pill in a small amount of wet food or a treat that your cat loves. Make sure to mask the pill well so that your cat doesn’t spit it out. Don’t use Kitty’s typical food. If he figures out you’ve messed with it he may never eat it again.
4. Use a syringe for liquid medication: If your senior cat requires liquid medication, using a syringe can make it easier to administer the correct dosage.

Finding a technique that works for your cat’s preferences is essential for successful medication administration.

If traditional methods of medication administration are not effective, consult with your veterinarian for alternative forms of medication. I know I avoid pills for Treeno whenever there’s an alternative. If neither pills or liquids work for your cat, perhaps it can be formulated into a transdermal gel you can rub into his ear flap.

It is still crucial to ensure proper medication management when traveling with your senior cat:

• Carry medications with personal belongings when traveling by plane: Make sure to pack your cat’s medications in your carry-on bag or personal belongings to have them readily accessible during the journey.
• Proper medication management during travel: Ensure that you have an adequate supply of medications for the duration of your trip and follow the prescribed schedule for administering them. Your pill bottles with timers and apps will make sure that Kitty gets his meds properly on vacation.
