Canidae Adore Review
Last Updated on May 10, 2021 by Holly Anne Dustin
We are trying a new cat food product from Canidae this month: Adore from their grain free Pure line. I have fed other Canidae products in the past but we have never tried this particular line.
Life and Cats received this product to review from Chewy.com in exchange for my cats’ honest opinion and an honest review. The opinions shared are mine and my cats’ alone.
Canidae is a family-owned company. I really appreciate the ethics and history of the company. They source their products from independent and small businesses and farmers in the US and around the world.
Adore is complete and balanced; appropriate for a dinner or as a topper. It is a shredded morsels texture. It has that “for the gourmet kitty” appearance. Shredded white meat chicken in nice broth, Adore doesn’t look like classic cat food.
Adore comes in cases of 24 cans. The 2.5 ounce cans priced at $36. The 5.5 is $55. We got the 2.5 ounce size. The feeding guidelines suggest 3-6 of the small cans or 1 ½ -2 ¾ large cans per 6-8 lbs of weight. The price would add up for a family with big cats or multi-cat homes. As a topper over kibble or a special treat for an adoption day celebration, I think it would be great.

Nutrition
Kitties have 9 flavors to choose from. We selected the Chicken and Shrimp flavor. My initial impression upon opening the food was positive. It had that pampered, gourmet kitty appearance. I couldn’t tell that there was shrimp in the food though. We have used other products that had whole shrimp visible in the food.
It has a lot of broth, great for keeping Kitty’s hydration levels up. I’m always pleased to have that for my cat with urinary tract issues. It pleased me that the food was carrageenan-free. More and more of the quality brands now remove that ingredient from their products. They use potato starch for thickener which raises the carbohydrate content. Some cats are sensitive to potatoes so that is something to keep in mind.
Adore uses sunflower oil instead of a fish oil. I prefer animal based products for cats. To keep close to a cat’s natural diet, you would want a product with fairly high protein, moderately high fat, and low carbohydrates. Adore is nicely high on the protein side, but it is higher on the carbohydrates and low on fat.
The product contains carrots. I’m not a big fan of vegetables in cat food. My cats usually leave them sitting in the bowl. But my biggest ingredient complaint is that Canidae includes salt and caramel flavoring. I don’t think kitties should needn’t flavoring like that. Read my guide on how to read a cat food label here.

What Do the Kitties Think of Canidae Adore?
I expected my furbabies to love it. The broth based, shredded or morsels style food is usually their favorite. The carrots were tiny flakes; I didn’t think it would bother them.
I was a little surprised by the cats’ reaction to Adore. My older, pickier cats didn’t want it. They milled around and fussed before finally figuring out I wasn’t offering anything else. They did finish it once they decided if they wanted dinner they ate it.

My little ones didn’t dive right in either, they sniffed around at it the first time but the second and third time I offered it they went right for it. They usually appreciate new foods but they were suspicious of Adore. They appreciated the gravy and when they ate it they didn’t leave the carrots in the bowl.

It disappointed me that my cats didn’t love the food. I wanted to write a glowing review of a product from a company I have great respect for, but my kitties had other ideas. Ultimately, it is their opinion that matters. Thank you Chewy for the opportunity to try a new product. If you haven’t shopped with Chewy before, I wrote a post about my experiences with them here.
