The Ultimate Cat Show Equipment Checklist

Cat shows are a great way to showcase your feline friend’s beauty and personality. However, participating in a cat show requires preparation and attention to detail. One of the most important aspects of preparing for a show is ensuring that you have all the necessary equipment. A friendly fellow exhibitor will usually bail you out if you forget something. Or you might be able to buy a replacement bowl or comb at a vendor. But why risk it? Make yourself a cat show equipment checklist (or download ours) and be prepared. Have a great show!

Equipment Checklist

An equipment checklist for a cat show typically includes items such as a carrier and cage, grooming tools, food and water bowls, litter box, and toys. It is important to make sure that all equipment is clean and in good condition before the show. Additionally, it is recommended to bring extra supplies in case of emergencies or unexpected situations.

Having a complete and organized equipment checklist can make the cat show experience more enjoyable for both the exhibitor and the cat.

Documentation and Identification

Copy of Registration Papers

To participate in a cat show, the cat’s registration papers with the sponsoring organization are essential. Make sure to bring a copy of the registration papers to the event. These papers should include the cat’s name, breed, date of birth, and registration number. It is also important to ensure that the registration is up-to-date and valid.

Once you know your records are current, correct, and valid you’ll have a digital record to pull up online and you won’t need your paperwork. My Treeno’s entries read brown tabby and white for a whole season and I couldn’t get it corrected. Even though anyone looking at him could see it was not “and white.”

Confirmation Emails

Before the cat show, the organizers usually send out confirmation emails to the participants. These emails contain important information, such as the cats you entered, fees due, date, time, and location of the event. They may also include details about the competition categories and any special requirements such as bring your own cage and litter, no outside food allowed in the show hall etc. Be sure to bring a printed copy of the confirmation email to the event unless you have reliable phone service or internet in the show hall and call it up digitally.

Vaccination Records

Cat shows require proof of vaccination to ensure the safety of all the cats attending. Bring a copy of the cat’s vaccination records to the event. These records should include the dates of the vaccinations and the type of vaccine administered. It is important to note that some cat shows may have specific vaccination requirements, so be sure to check the event’s rules and regulations beforehand. You won’t need to show it to anyone unless it is a vetted show or if your cat scratches or bites someone, but in those cases you need to produce proof on the spot.

Overall, it is essential to have all the necessary documentation and identification for your cat to participate in a cat show. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your feline friend. I tend to be over prepared, but it keeps me sane knowing I won’t run into problems.

Essential Cat Show Gear

Preparing for a cat show can be overwhelming, but having the right gear can make all the difference. Here are some essential items to consider bringing along:

Carrier and Stroller

A sturdy carrier is a must-have for transporting your cat to and from the show. Look for one that is well-ventilated and comfortable for your cat, it is also helpful if it folds up to save space. This carrier is the one we use.

A stroller can also be a great investment, allowing you to easily move your cat around the show without having to carry them. Look for one that is lightweight and easy to maneuver, as you’ll be carrying it around all day. This can be especially helpful for larger shows with multiple rings. I’m really grateful for it in large show halls when I have to carry my large-sized Ragdoll around.

Cart or Wagon

Bringing your cat’s supplies and equipment into the venue can be a hassle without a cart or wagon. Ideally, you’ll be able to fit your cats in their carriers and all their gear on your cart so you don’t have to make many trips to the parking lot. Especially if you’re not parked close or are showing multiple cats. Get something that folds up so you can store it under your benching table during the show.

Show Shelter

Providing a comfortable and private space for your cat during the show is important. A show shelter can help keep your cat calm and relaxed, and can also provide a space for them to rest between judging. Look for one that is easy to set up and take down, and that provides adequate ventilation. If you are not ready to purchase a shelter yet, you can rent a wire cage from the caging service. It is included in your entry.

Drapes, Curtains, and Decorations

Adding some personal touches to your cat’s area can help make them feel more at home and stand out in the ring. Drapes, curtains, and decorations can all be used to create a cozy and inviting space for your cat. Just be sure to follow show rules and regulations regarding decorations. Any limitations other than that your stuff needs to fit in your assigned space will be noted on the show flyer.

Feeding Supplies

Food and Water Bowls

When it comes to feeding supplies for a cat show, it is important to bring food and water bowls that are appropriate for your cat’s size and breed. The bowls should be made of a sturdy and non-toxic material, such as stainless steel or ceramic or a disposable bowl. Long haired cats do best with something that keeps their fur clean and dry. A bib helps too. You’ll see a lot of Persians wearing coffee filter collars. It just protects their grooming.

It is also recommended to bring extra bowls in case of spills or accidents. Labeling the bowls with your cat’s name can help prevent mix-ups with other cats’ bowls.

Treats for Rewarding

Treats are a great way to reward your cat for good behavior during the show. However, it is important to choose treats that are healthy and appropriate for your cat’s diet.

Some popular options include freeze-dried meat treats, small pieces of cooked chicken or fish, and catnip-infused treats. Churu purees and similar squeeze-up treats are very popular.  It is important to avoid treats that are high in calories or contain ingredients that your cat may be allergic to. You don’t want to have to deal with digestive upset in the show hall.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Litter Box and Litter

You’ll need to bring your own litter box but most shows provide litter for free. The show flyer will tell you if that’s the case. If your cat is particular, you can bring some from home. The show litter is usually non-clumping clay. Bring a scoop and scoop the litter box frequently throughout the day and dispose of the waste properly.

Waste Disposal Bags

Bring plenty of waste disposal bags to dispose of the used litter and any other waste. Seal the bags tightly and dispose of them properly in the designated trash bins.

Pee Pads

Accidents can happen, I bring pee pads for the hotel and the car mostly, but I put one under the litter box in my show shelter too.

Comfort Items

Favorite Toys

Bringing along a few favorite toys can help keep your furry friend entertained and calm during the cat show. Don’t bring things that make a lot of noise or might upset the cats benched around you.

Bedding

Having a comfortable place to rest is important for any cat, especially during an event like a cat show. Bring along a cozy blanket or bed that your cat is familiar with to help them feel more at ease.

Grooming Supplies

Combs and Brushes

At a cat show, grooming is essential to make sure that your feline friend looks their best. Combs and brushes are necessary tools to keep your cat’s coat clean and free of tangles. Bring the appropriate grooming tools for your cat’s fur.

Nail Clippers

Trimming your cat’s nails is another important part of grooming. Nail clippers designed specifically for cats are recommended. Clippers with a safety guard help prevent accidentally cutting the quick, which can cause pain and bleeding. It’s a good idea to have styptic powder on hand in case of any accidental cuts.

Cotton Pads or Tissues

Cotton pads or tissues are useful for cleaning your cat’s ears, eyes, and nose. They can also be used to apply grooming products such as powders or sprays.

Grooming Sprays or Powders

Grooming sprays or powders can help keep your cat’s coat looking and smelling fresh. Sprays can be used to detangle and texturize the coat, while powders can be used to absorb moisture and oils. It’s important to choose products specifically designed for cats and to follow the instructions carefully.

Paper Towels or Wipes

Paper towels or wipes are handy for cleaning up any messes during grooming. They can also be used to wipe down your cat’s paws and bottom after using the litter box. It’s a good idea to choose unscented and gentle products to avoid irritating your cat’s skin.

Overall, having a well-stocked grooming kit can make a big difference in your cat’s appearance and comfort at a cat show. Trust me, Johnny and I found that out the hard way this weekend. He had a litterbox accident and got poop in his tail. Just picture cleaning poo out of a white and ivory ragdoll coat while the clerks are calling rings.

Summary

A cat show equipment checklist makes for a well-prepared exhibitor. That can make the difference between a chaotic and stressful event and a smooth and enjoyable one for all involved. It is essential for a successful cat show. It ensures that you have everything you need to properly care for your cats and present them in the best possible light.
