What is palatability and why does it matter when feeding your cat?
Palatability describes what a cat likes about the taste, smell and texture or “mouthfeel“ of food. After all, the best food ever isn’t any good if your cat won’t eat it.
Cats have only about 500 taste buds, much less than humans with 9,000, but 5 times as many scent receptors as we do. A cat bases his first impression of food on scent. They need a strong meaty aroma. The balance of the macronutrients: protein, fat, carbohydrates, the acidity and moisture content also affects the palatability of cat food.
Cats have a reputation for being finicky eaters. They don’t want to try something new but they get bored with the same old thing day after day. It is almost like feeding a toddler. In the wild, these feeding behaviors protect the cat from eating something toxic and helps keep their diet balanced.
Domesticated cats that eat a variety of foods are less likely to refuse when presented with a new product. It is important that we offer kittens a variety of foods as they are learning to eat on their own. As adults, they remember what Mama taught them was okay to eat and what they liked as kittens.
Solid Gold Triple Layer Cat Food
Solid Gold Triple Layer cat food can help provide variety to your finicky feline. Each cup offers a pâté, a whipped mousse, and shreds. It looks visually appealing when you plate it up for your fur baby. If your cat appreciates variety in their diet, this could be a fun offering for a birthday cake or Thanksgiving dinner.
The food is grain-free, gluten-free, soy free and high protein. The carbohydrate content is under 10%. It has no artificial flavors or colors. Although carrageenan free, this product contains xanthan gum, guar gum, carob bean gum and tapioca starch. These gums can be problematic for cats with IBD. Solid Gold Triple Layer cat food comes in three flavors: Turkey, Chicken and Salmon. Fed alone, your cat would eat 1.5 – 4.5 cups a day.
The mousse layer is pumpkin based. Pumpkin is controversial for cats. One side contends that pumpkin provides fiber for a happy digestive system and helps with hairballs. The other argument says that as obligate carnivores there is no need for plant matter in a cats diet.
Solid Gold is the original holistic pet food company. The company was founded by a Great Dane breeder, Sissy Harrington McGill, in 1974. Solid Gold now offers both a dog and a cat line of natural, holistic food, treats and supplements.
Do They Like It?
We tried the turkey flavor. However, the ingredient list leads with chicken, and includes tuna, egg whites and whole eggs. The dryness of the shredded layer and firmness of the mousse surprised me. Based on the description I expected something softer. I didn’t expect my cats to like it.
I offered it to Plush and Treeno to celebrate a title win. Their siblings couldn’t help horning in on the celebration. Treeno wasn’t that impressed. Plush relished his treat as did the invaders. My kittens are used to variety, but I have not fed them anything like Triple Layer before. They were happy to dig in with no hesitation.
