Summer Safety in Your Catio: Dos and Don’ts
At last the snow has given up, the temperatures are warming, and the mud has dried up. It’s time to open up the catio for the summer. But first we have to make sure everything is safe and secure for Kitty to enjoy. With a few things in mind, you can optimize your catio for the summer months and offer her a beautifully refreshed catio to explore full of new enrichment opportunities. Start by making sure you have done the necessary seasonal maintenance for summer safety in your catio.

Repairs and Maintenance of the Catio
Check out your catio before you open it for the summer. Address any repairs or seasonal maintenance and give the catio a good cleaning.
- Look for loose screws, splintered wood, peeling paint, rusted wire, or torn mesh.
- Ensure that the structure is secure and can withstand summer weather conditions.
- Redo any necessary sealing or staining of the catio wood.
- Check to make sure Kitty can’t dig out.
- Sweep and hose down or pressure wash the catio.
- Bleach artificial grass and any furniture that has spent the winter outside.

Balance Sunlight and Shade in the Summer Catio
I don’t know about yours but my cats love their sun puddles! But summer days get hot and they need places to retreat to the shade. The easiest way to balance this is to put a roof or shade cover over part of your catio. If you can’t add something permanent, use an an awning or canvas shade.
You can also add shady spots under benches or chairs. Turn a basket or box on it’s side and add an all-weather cushion for comfort. A deck umbrella can provide shade and shelter too.

Cool Off Kitty
Add cooling beds or mats. They are great way to give Kitty with a comfortable, cool spot. You can purchase commercial products. But an elevated mesh bed in the shady part of the catio can become a cooling space by adding a frozen water jug to cool the area. If you can safely add a fan, blowing it across the frozen jug or cooling mat will increase the cooling ability.
Watch Kitty closely for any signs of overheating. Don’t ignore the weather. The most important feature of summer safety in the catio is you and your supervision.

Provide Plenty of Water
Just like us, Kitty needs to stay hydrated to be safe when playing outside. A water bowl is a start, but adding fountains makes the water more interesting. In the wild, a cat would not choose stagnant water if there were other options available. Fountains are nice to look at, listen too, and drink from. Keep all the water sources cool, clean, and fresh for Kitty throughout the day. Add ice on the hottest days.
In addition to bowls and fountains, you could add a water feature for Kitty to play with. Your space may not allow a pond or waterfall. But you could add a small kiddie pool. Or even scale it down further and use a large heavy dish. Surround your water sources with cat safe plants and make Kitty a nice little oasis in her catio. Adding mechanical fish, ping pong balls, or ice cubes make it fun. Vary it up.

Add Enrichment to Your Summer Catio
- Include ramps, perches, shelves, and benches to give Kitty options for vertical climbing and perching spaces when building your catio. Bring in a log or other options for scratching.
- Bring in some larger, potted, cat-safe plants or small trees depending on what your space allows. Check out this list by the ASPCA for suggestions.
- Hanging cat-safe plants along the edges will give Kitty visual and olfactory enrichment.
- Grow some catnip and cat grass in pots around the catio. If you don’t have place where Kitty can get her paws on real ground and grass, consider growing a small “lawn” in a pool or sandbox or garden box.
- Decorate with bright cat beds or cushions. Don’t forget to add some comfortable seating for yourself to spend time with Kitty in your summer catio.
- Hang some windchimes, put up garden spinners, and bird feeders outside the catio to increase the interesting things for Kitty to see.

Ban the Bugs
A fine pet-proof screen as the walls for your catio can help keep bugs out. But don’t skip the flea and tick protection. If your area has a high risk, consider something that keeps away mosquitoes. Don’t keep food in the catio, it will entice ants, and other animals, to visit your catio and you don’t want that. Make sure you keep it clean if you give Kitty access to a litter box out in her catio.
Summary
A well-designed catio can significantly enhance your furry friends’ quality of life while keeping them safe and entertained during the warmer months. It allows them to bask in the sun, breathe fresh air, and connect with their natural instincts in a secure environment that keeps both Kitty and the neighborhood wildlife safe.
A successful summer catio experience hinges on you taking proactive measures to summer safety in your catio, and creativity in designing an optimized and enriched space that caters to your cats’ needs. Watch your feline friends thrive in their personalized outdoor paradise.
