Product Review: Kong Zoom Groom for Cats

The Zoom Groom is a grooming tool made by Kong. It comes in a cat and dog model, the cat model is purple.  I’ve looked at it for years while I was working in the pet retail jungle, but I never bought it because I didn’t think it would work well on my longhaired cats.  It has great reviews on the major sites. Trust the reviews if you have a shorthaired cat.

Zoom Groom is a silicon or rubbery type brush with thick bristles. It won’t hurt your cat. Kong recommends it for brushing and shampooing all breeds and coat types.  I have not tried it wet but I am going to try it. If it works as well as advertised it will help a lot of cats with shedding out their undercoat.

My new grooming client was a large domestic short hair who had a serious seasonal shedding issue. He doesn’t like being brushed but the Zoom Groom was a success for him.  Kong recommends using the brush in a circular motion as you would curry a horse.  On my short-haired client that worked really well and he loved it.  I got so much hair off him.

The rubber bristles work as a massager too. My Matisse is a mix of Siberian and domestic shorthair. He is shorthaired, but has a really thick deep coat. Judges tell me his coat feels like a mink stole. He is not a fan of being groomed but he loves the Zoom Groom. A good massage with the Zoom Groom really gets his purr motor going.

On Minnie, my medium haired girl, it was okay, I think she was confused by the novelty.  She definitely preferred the typical head to tail brushing and tolerated a few tail to head strokes that loosened up a lot of undercoat.

Great for Shorthairs, Not for All Longhairs

I do not recommend this tool for true long haired cats with a silky Persian style coat.  My Persian gets groomed daily and normally enjoys it.  He tolerated the Zoom Groom for a bit when I was going with growth, when I went against the growth (tail to head) he bit me.  I think it pulls on the true long haired cats.  I imagine the circular motion would drive matting on the silky coats too.

Another thing I did not like about the Zoom Groom was that the fur just sort of floats around in the air or lose on the cat.  It is a mess to clean up after. However, it is also a great clean up tool for fur that is on sofas or other upholstered items, just brush the couch instead of the cat and the fur comes right up. 

I would rate the Zoom Groom as a 3.5 or 4 out of 5.  Definitely not worth more than Amazon is charging for it, and look around because you can likely find it cheaper.
