Celebrate Your Cat’s Birthday: Ideas and Tips

Have you ever thrown your cat a birthday party or Gotcha Day celebration? Some may scoff at the idea of celebrating a cat’s birthday, others see it as a fun and festive way to show their furry friend just how much they mean to them. I’ve never thrown a  full-blown cat birthday bash. I’m not that social and neither are my cats. But we always at least have a family event with special meals for the cats, cake for all and gifts. I’d love to really have a do sometime. Plush turns 10 this year and Treeno will be 17. Maybe we’ll try to do something a little bigger. Keep in mind as you plan that this is about Kitty and providing her with a fun, enriching day and not something stressful. Your own fun should come in seeing her enjoyment. It’s not about what you want. That said, here are some ideas on how to celebrate your cat’s birthday:

Preparing for the Party

The first step in celebrating your cat’s birthday is to prepare for the party. Start by selecting a date and time that works best for you and your cat. Make sure to choose a time when your cat is most active and playful.

Next, create a guest list. Decide whether you want to invite other cats or just humans. If you plan to invite other cats, make sure they get along with your cat and each other. Not all cats want to spend time with other cats that aren’t part of their household. It is fine to just have a family party. Or just to invite humans that have a relationship with Kitty.

Finally, choose a location for the party. It can be in your home or in a park, depending on your cat’s preferences. Make sure the location is safe and comfortable for your cat and guests.

Choose a theme. Consider Kitty’s favorite things or just make cats your theme. Decorate appropriately. Make sure your decor is safe for your cat.

Every Birthday Party Needs a Cake

You might be able to find a cat safe cake at a local pet supply boutique. Or order a cake and ice cream mix from PetCakes. The kit includes everything you need, even a pan. All sourced in the USA and cat safe. Loads of suggestions for how to customize the cake and ice cream to your cat’s tastes. You can buy a smaller PetCakes kit at Amazon.

It isn’t that hard to make Kitty a cake yourself. Recipes abound online. Choose Kitty’s favorite protein and go from there. Try this one.  I haven’t tried it, but a friend has and wrote a blog post about it.

If you have more felines celebrating with you, be sure you make enough for everyone. If you don’t want to make something, buy a can of pate food for each cat attending, “ice” it with some licky treats, and top it with a meat treat or some temptations or kibble.

Go ahead. Get or make a human-friendly cake and ice cream for the people celebrating too. I always get a very plain flavor because Treeno is obsessed with ice cream.

Party Food for your Cat’s Birthday Party

Every party needs a snack table! Make a cat version of a charcuterie board. A variety of chewy and crunchy treats is sure to whet her appetite for the main course. Make one with human treats for your friends or family attending too.

Offer deli meat and cheese, tuna, salmon and egg salad for sandwiches as your main course. A few nibbles of the sandwich fillings won’t hurt Kitty.

Party Ideas

Parties aren’t just about food. What are you going to do to keep everyone entertained? This is where you want to think about the event through the eyes of offering enrichment to your furbaby. Here are some ideas:

• Buy new toys for your cat and guests to play with
• Set up a catnip station for your cat and guests to enjoy. Offer inviting and enriching plants. Catnip, cat thyme, silvervine, cat grass, and valerian to add some greenery and scent enrichment. 
• Treasure Hunt: spread a variety of treats around the house and let Kitty find them.
• Play with Kitty with her favorite toys
• Create a playground. Use boxes or play tunnels and cat tents. Throw in some catnip toys and treats
• Go wild and get a disco ball. The lights will fascinate Kitty.
• Don’t forget the party favors! Send a small toy, a licky treat, a small packet of party mix treat, a small catnip plant. Add a set of cat ears for your human friends to wear.
