Celebrate a Purr-Fect Valentine’s Day with Your Cat

Last Updated on February 6, 2023 by Holly Anne Dustin

Valentine’s Day celebrates love. Why not use the holiday to celebrate the love you and your feline friend share?  Use the opportunity to strengthen the bond you have with your Kitty and give him a great day. Not all cats will appreciate all these ideas. You might have to be extra creative if you’re spoiling a family of multiple cats but there should be something on the list that your kitties will love. Get ready to make this year’s Valentine’s Day extra special with your beloved cat!

What is a Purrfect Valentine’s Day with Your Cat?

A “Purrfect” Valentine’s Day with your cat could include activities that you both can enjoy. Start with special treats and toys that they won’t be able to resist. Spend quality time together cuddling and brushing their fur, then take a break for interactive playtime filled with running, jumping, and chasing. If your cat enjoys adventuring outside or in the community, take advantage of it. Lastly, dedicate some quiet time to simply sit together and relax—don’t forget to give lots of love! The best Valentine’s Gift you can give your pet is spending time showing your appreciation for them.

Go Shopping or Adventuring

If your cat is an adventure cat, comfortable in public on his harness and leash, take him out for a nice walk exploring a favorite place.  Plush and I are skipping this one because of the weather here in the snowy northlands. Maybe I should get him a new coat or collar for Valentine’s Day?

Take him to the pet store to pick out some gifts. Pick out a favorite toy or let him try something new.  If online shopping is more your thing, we compiled some of our favorites. Be sure to include a Valentine theme toy.  Yeowww! catnip is always a winner here. You know your cat. Choose toys that are safe from him.

Kitty more of a dress up type? Choose a Valentine theme sweater or a pretty dress. Add a shiny bling-y collar for some sparkle.

Get coffee with him.  My favorite coffee place doesn’t have catpucchinos so we usually go to Starbucks or Dunkin. Again, Plush enjoys this sort of thing; a cat that doesn’t have practice going out in the community would not find it a positive addition to a special day.

Have a Game Night

Pull out your new toys or their old faves and have fun together.  Try making something new to play with if you’re the crafty type.  Crochet some yarn balls, make a forage box, or a feather wand toy. A good 15 minute play session gives Kitty a good workout and will have him feeling good.

Build Kitty a Box Fort

Save up your Chewy boxes and Amazon cartons and build a castle or a tank. You can buy a premade version if you prefer, but why not let Kitty help? Throw in some of the Chewy packing paper and add some catnip to play with.

Have a Spa Day

Enjoy a nice grooming session:

Even if you can’t do a bath and blowout, you can clean his face and ears, give him a nice brushing session, and a mani-pedi.  A professional groomer can help if you need it. Maybe you can get your hair done while Kitty gets his fur done.

Give him a massage:

Kitty won’t have patience for an hour-long session like we would love, but a 5-10 minute session is relaxing for both of you.  If you’ve never tried it, you can learn here.

Fix Something Special for Him

My cats love baked chicken or salmon. Something roasted is a special thing for them.  Buying his favorite canned food is a great alternative if your cat doesn’t appreciate the “people food” twist on special. You can still make it special. Making his regular food extra delicious with a topper or seasoning is another choice.

Novelty in the dinner bowl really puts some cats off, so know your furbaby‘s tastes.  If he isn’t used to variety stick with buying the favorite and make his day special in other ways.

Make Him Some Treats

What would a purrfect day be without some creative and delicious treats? Try whipping up some homemade cat treats with ingredients like tuna, salmon, or chicken. Keep him safe from your chocolate and sweets with xylitol. Instead, whip him up a home-made treat for dessert while he enjoys his special meal. Some great options are found here but Pinterest is also full of them.

Spend quality time together

Spending quality time together is the key to a purrfect Valentine’s Day with your cat. Show Kitty how much you care by taking some extra time for snuggles, playing with cat toys, or even brushing them or giving them a good scratch behind the ears. Try some of these activities to wind down your day.

  • Watch his favorite TV show together.  Plush has a weird attraction to Northwoods Law, but a nature show or YouTube video with birds or small animals usually gets my kittens excited.
  • Read a book together.  We had fun reading the Catland series by Midnight Panther.  I think the Warriors series or James Herriott’s Cat Stories would be fun.  There are a lot of cute books telling stories of rescue cats.  Mostly your cat will just enjoy your voice.
  • Pull out the catnip and have a party.
  • Take a nap. I’m going to guess this will be one of Kitty’s favorite part of the holiday.  Buy her a new cuddly blanket and snuggle up for a nap.

Conclusion

If you have a furry little valentine at home, it’s time to give them some extra love this special day! Spend quality time snuggling, playing together, and giving them treats. Tell your cats how much you love them and appreciate their companionship; after all, they might not always show it but cats do care about their people deeply!
