History of the American Curl Cat Breed

The American Curl breed of cats is a relatively new breed that originated in the United States in the early 1980s. The first American Curl cat was discovered in Lakewood, California, in 1981, by a woman named Grace Ruga. The cat had a unique genetic mutation that caused its ears to curl backward.

Ruga decided to breed her with a male cat to see if the trait would be passed on to her offspring. The result was a litter of kittens, all of which had curled ears. The mutation is dominant; so only one parent needs to have curled ears to produce curled eared kittens.

American Curl kittens are all born with straight ears. They start to curl back in 3-5 days until permanently “set” at around 16 weeks. 

Ruga began to breed American Curl cats in earnest and eventually formed a breeding program with other cat enthusiasts. In 1987, the breed was officially recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA), and in 1993, it was recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).

Since then, the American Curl breed has gained popularity around the world, with breeders in North America, Europe, and Asia.

American Curl Breed Standard

American Curls are slender and elegant, medium-sized cats with a well-balanced, moderate body and a soft, silky coat that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. They are available in both long and shorthair color and pattern varieties. They are a typical 8-10 pound cat. 

Head

They should have a minimum 90 degree arc of curl, not to exceed 180 degrees. Ear “furnishings”, or fur, are desirable. 30 of the available 100 points in an American Curl’s score is in the ears.

Body

The American Curl is a semi-foreign, rectangular cat. The breed has a well-muscled, well-balanced, medium-sized body. The legs should be medium in length and have a sturdy bone structure. The paws should be round and firm, with five toes in front and four in the back. The Curl’s tail should be flexible, equal to body length and taper to a rounded tip. 

Coat and Color

The American Curl has a soft, silky, coat that lies flat against the body. The fur should be fine and not too dense. American Curl’s have minimal undercoat. The longhair coat is a semi long coat, the shorthair version is resilient but not plush or dense in texture. The breed comes in a variety of colors and patterns, including solid, shaded, tabby, and pointed and bicolor.
